How did you get into Marketing?
I became a civil servant in the Ministry of Defence at 18 and worked in various roles. The final 3/4 years of my 10-year career were in marketing and PR. When I left the civil service, I continued building my marketing experience and completed a BA (Hons) in English Language and English Literature with the Open University.
I’m passionate about people, motivated by adding value, and can be quite creative so marketing seemed to be a good fit!
What’s been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
I’ve chosen two highlights as I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a lot of interesting projects! One highlight is when I worked in Defence PR, and I was fortunate to be able to support the filming of a Help for Heroes advert. I got to meet the Red Arrows and meet some amazing armed forces personnel who appeared in the advert at the time.
I also had the opportunity to be interviewed for Kent TV when I was touring with a MOD exhibition. The exhibition focussed on the contribution of Britain’s ethnic minority communities to UK Defence over the last 250 years. I went out to schools and shopping centres with the exhibition to help promote a better understanding of how men and women from Africa, Asia, the West Indies, and other Commonwealth countries fought and served alongside British forces during many major conflicts.
What do you like best about your role?
Apart from me living 3 minutes away from the office? I really enjoy the collaboration aspect of my role. It’s great being able to talk directly with the developers about the applications and listen to the support calls. It helps me build a picture of the stories we want to tell in our marketing campaigns.
Plus, the office banter is pretty fun!
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I am a netball player, coach, and umpire. I am the Head Coach of the club, which also includes a junior section that I set up in 2022. I coach another senior club in Cambridgeshire and am an assistant coach for my son’s football team.
